Draw Update Help

The draws for the National Inter-Club competitions are created and maintained by submitting news items.

Anyone who can create news items can create and update the draws by following the procedures described below.

Note that to submit a news item you must be authorised and logged-in.

Updating the Draw

(To create or update the initial draw, see the next section).

News items are automatically incorporated into the relevant draw when they are made public, but only if the headline follows the correct format (with home team always first):

The news report is tentatively checked against the draw when it is first saved as draft and any error reports or warnings are shown then. Once it is saved as public the errors are ignored and the draw is updated using all valid news items.

The draw is updated when the news item is submitted as public (i.e. not until the editing stage is completed). If there are errors, the draw is not updated and the user is alerted again, but the news item is still saved. To complete the update in the event of errors being reported, edit the news item in error and submit as public in the normal way.

You should include the venue and date in all score reports - the venue is referenced in subsequent clashes between the teams to decide who should be the home team.

Creating a New Draw (or Updating the Seed Draw After it is Submitted)

To create a fresh draw (or to change the initial draw of an existing draw) refer to the example below and follow the steps below. Bear in mind that the draw is initialised by submitting only the first round - teams with byes must be listed with their bye in the first round.

1. Write your draw by listing the teams in the first round using 'bye' as a team name, even if there are two byes together.
2. Place all the (first-round) names on one line using ~ as a separator (add spaces too if you like, they appear for humans but are ignored by the system).
3. Insert a double opening brace at the beginning {{

5. If you need headings for the rounds then place these immediately after the closing braces, using the ~ separator.
6. Submit a news item as follows:
   • Headline: the single word draw.
   • Classification: select the competition whose draw you are updating.
   • Details: the draw formatted in two lines as described above (and shown in the example below).
7. Click Save as Draft.
8. Review the draft and edit if necessary - note that news items are incorporated into the draw as described in the section above.
9. When you are satisfied that it is correct, save the news item as public - this will delete the exiting initial draw and insert the one you just entered. Any results in news reports are then added so you can do this at any time, even near the end of the competition to change a round heading.
10. Note that it is not saved as a news item so once it is made public there is no way to edit it - you would have to enter (or copy/paste) the information in once again. To get you started, you can use the following, but remember to delete all but the first and last lines:
    • The Inter-Club Championship (Association Croquet)
    • The Golf Croquet Inter-Club Championship (Golf Croquet)
    • The Mary Rose Inter-Club Trophy (Association Croquet)
    • The Golf Croquet Inter-Club Shield (The Murphy Shield) (Golf Croquet)
    • The Longman Club Team Cup (Association Croquet)
    • The Secretary's Shield (Association Croquet)

Important Notes

• Take care that you use the team name that will be used in news reports - the names in the draw have to match subsequent reported results.
• Any text in parentheses appears on the display but is ignored by the system - for example it is common to indicate which team won last year with (Holders) - this could be a problem with team names that include parentheses.
• Use \ anywhere you want a line break - text after it is ignored when matching team names.
• The date in the draw is taken from the date you make the draw entry - if you need anything different, discuss it with the webmaster.

Note that the following text may be wrapped (or formatted) to fit your screen or you may need to scroll across to see it all, however each cell represents one continuous line and you must not use line breaks (the return/enter key) within them. Also note that the headings in the example (e.g. Line 1) should not appear in the text you submit.
